11 tips to grow beyond the start-up phase : Grow your business

11 tips to grow beyond the start-up phase

 HIRE PEOPLE WHO ARE BETER AT THE JOB THAN YOU ARE
It’s fact that companies are built by people, and the best people build the best and most profitable companies. Put simply, great employees may cost you 20 to 30% more in wages, but they can be twice as productive as mediocre employees. Invest in good people.

 PLACE HIGH URGENCY IN VERYTHING YOU DO
Always do everything you can do. Too many people treat their businesses as 9 to 5 jobs. Never put some thing off until tomorrow if you can do it right now.

 GET CUSTOMERS COMING BACK
The road to profitability is through repeat business. Too few business owners set themselves up for long term success .Your business grown when you add regular new customers on top of existing regular customers. Think of it this way: What if every customer you ever got stayed for life? How many regular buyers would you have?

 MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY
New companies don’t have the time or resources to stand still. General H Norman Schwarzkopf once said,” When placed in command, take charge.” It’s better to make decision and move than to stand still.

 DELIVER MORE THAN YOU PROMISE
If you tell a customer it’ll be three days, deliver in two. If you think it’ll be two hours, say three hours and surprise them. This is the best form of marketing ever.

 PRICE YOURSELF FOR PROFIT
Don’t ever be the cheapest. You are the little guy; you don’t have economies of scale. Big companies can make up in volume what they lack in margin. You can’t.

 NEVER SPEND A RUPE YOU DON’T HAVE TO
You don’t need a new desk, you need a cheap desk. Too many new business owners go and buy the best stuff because they think image is important. Listen, when you get profitable, you can have a big mahogany desk. Right now, just get a desk.

 SET A BIG VISION
Start small, finish big should be the title of your book. Don’t aim to the best dog trainer in your city-aim to be the best in the country. Remember, building a business is a 10- year plan, not a one-year plan.

 MARKETING IS A MATH
Don’t ever let an advertising sales representative teach you anything about marketing .They will say dumb thins like, “Half your advertising works and half doesn’t-and you will never know which half.” Rubbish. If an ad that costs Rs 100 gets you 100 back in profit, it’s a good ad. One other tip: Image advertising doesn’t make sense when you are not yet profitable.

 LEARN TO SELL

There’s nothing worse than a business owner who is not willing to sell-or even learn to sell. No company makes money unless someone sells some thing, and you can’t just rely on people you hire to do the selling for you. If you want to grow a profitable business, you’ve got to learn sales yourself.

 IT’S SIMPLER THAN YOU THINK
Before most people even go into business, they work it up to be far more complex than it really is. Business is very simple: Sell at a profit and keep at it. Overcomplicating the process won’t help anyone. If your business seems too complex, it probably is-so make it simple and watch yourself succeed

Master Online Jobs with paid surveys and mystery shopping

The online work at home labor is steadily and surely expanding. More and more people prefer to work online from the comfort of their homes, instead of tirelessly commuting to some hectic and stressful workplaces. Online surveys and web shopping (also called online mystery shopping) have been chosen by many who have ventured to substitute a fun and stress-relieving online career for a dull and unrewarding office job.

Online surveys are just one of the many online jobs available in the work-from-home databases on the web. However, taking paid surveys online is also one of the top-ranking online jobs, according to recent statistics. Why are online surveys so popular?

One of the reasons is that people just need to sit down and fill in the online questionnaires without much thinking or analysis. In fact, paid surveys are extremely easy, because you only need to provide information that is relevant to you about what you like, dislike or your shopping habits. Paid surveys are really easy to fill in and submit, and you can take more than a few per hour, if you are a more ambitious paid survey taker. However, a single survey company will rarely launch more than a few online surveys per month and, therefore, you need to register for at least a few survey sites. Taking paid online surveys is one of the exciting and fun online jobs that provide Internet fans and online workers with tremendous opportunities to get rewarded for their free time.

Secret shopping is another example of a dynamic and rewarding online job that provides excellent incentives to people from different backgrounds to earn cash and prizes in their free time. Web shopping for cash and prizes has become highly popular among those who spend most of their time online anyway. Shopping online is not only fun, but can also bring you cash, free products, free trials, free services, discounts and gift certificates. Web shoppers enjoy tremendous bonuses and fun prizes for doing what they like the most – web shopping.

Many people benefit from the fun opportunities of online jobs to earn during their free time. Online jobs are an exciting alternative for people with different social and professional backgrounds who need more variety, more job flexibility and more cash.

Online Job Vacancies Up in September

The Conference Board reported that online job vacancies in September rose 4% compared with August, according to its Help-Wanted Online Data Series. Year-over-year, online vacancies were up 17.5% in September.

"The more 'mature' areas in terms of Internet usage, like the west and east coasts, where online job advertising has been popular for some time, the rate of growth has slowed," Gad Levanon, an economist at the Conference Board, said in a statement. "In many of the smaller metro areas, and where online job advertising has lagged behind the largest metro areas, the growth rates continue to be very strong."

The 4% increase in total ads reflected a 6% increase in new ads. Year-over-year, in September the number of new ads posted advanced 22.6%.

The top metro areas in September for advertised vacancies were Austin, Texas; San Jose, Calif.; and San Francisco.

Alaska posted the highest ads rate in the country followed by Nevada and Colorado. Montana leads the nation with the lowest supply/demand rate.

The states where the number of unemployed people looking for work significantly exceeded the number of online advertised jobs included Mississippi, Michigan, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Many people have become avid fans of these online jobs because of the great rewards and flexibility that paid surveys and mystery shopping provide. Learn why completing online surveys and mystery shopping are two of the hottest online jobs.

Paid Surveys – Cash for what you already have – your opinion

One of the greatest benefits ever of online jobs is that you get rid of the stressful office environment. You are able to sit back and relax, while earning. You can enjoy your cup of cappuccino or herbal team at leisure, laid comfortably on you couch. In the same time, you can earn good cash and exciting prizes for just a few-hours’ work. What’s the beauty of paid surveys that makes it such an enticing online job?

With paid online surveys, you get paid for one of your greatest assets – your opinion. Your opinion counts and is well appreciated by the marketing research industry that is trying to catch the wave of consumer opinion. Your opinion costs you effort and time to provide, while it costs companies alluring incentives to get into your head. Paid surveys do not require any skills or hard work – you just need to speak out about what you like, dislike, and prefer as a consumer. Most paid surveys will either ask you about your general taste and preferences, or will ask you to rate previous purchases, brands, or advertising campaigns. Everyone is a consumer and, therefore, everyone qualifies to take free paid surveys. Online jobs such as paid surveys are a great opportunity for everyone who wishes some extra cash, free services, discounts and free prizes to get an extra income with minimum effort in one’s free time.

Mystery shopping – Dynamic Online Job with a Bright Future

If you like traveling around in your area, meeting new people, and having a more dynamic daily routine, mystery shopping is right for you. On the contrary, if you prefer the comfort of your home, mystery web shopping is also right for you. Mystery shopping jobs can fit any kind of lifestyle. This dynamic online job suits both the shopaholics and the web junkies. However you prefer to spend your day, we all go shopping. Then why not earn some extra cash or get a free service at your local store just for going shopping?

Mystery shopping is more than just a fun online and offline activity. It is versatile, always challenging, and you can master important communication and evaluation skills through it. Although mystery shopping does not require any previous experience, it’s good if you are an easy-going, flexible and open-minded person who’s up to meeting different people in different settings. Mystery shoppers can not only enjoy shopping and getting services for free, but they also grow professional and get hired by more local companies to do mystery shopping for them. Mystery shopping is a steadily emerging branch of market research and welcomes motivated people aspiring to get great cash and prizes for shopping their products and services.

Freelancing as A Career Option

Home bound workers can either consider telecommuting or freelancing. While telecommuting may keep you out of your home for some hours a week, online freelancing is a good way to make money if you are forced to stay at home. For example, homemakers, part-time students, retired folk, or others who wish to supplement their income from jobs or businesses can all consider freelancing.

Freelance Skill Sets

You can start earning as a freelancer as long as you have skills that someone is willing to pay for. For example, writers, web designers, photographers, freelance writers and programmers can earn a substantial income by creating articles, websites, portfolios and software from home. The Internet is a hot and viable source of income for freelancers from around the world. Your target customers can be webmasters, online business owners, blog owners etc. For example, blogs and wikis are hot sources of income for freelance writers nowadays, and there's no reason why you can't tap into this market if you possess good writing skills.

Freelance Income

On the flip, your income may fluctuate from one month to another. As with all businesses, freelancing does not guarantee a stable paycheck at the end of the month. So keep a small kitty reserve for dry days or have another source of income for which you can work part-time. Be prepared to accept boring, low-level work initially just to keep the cash flow strong. Once you get a good reputation for providing original, high-quality work at reasonable price, then clients will flock to you.

Freelance Advantages

Probably the best thing about freelancing is that you get to work at your pace, in your own hours, from home, and be your own boss. That means, your shop is open 24x7. And as long as you provide good quality work and meet deadlines, your clients will remain happy with you.

In order to be visible, you also need to be seen and heard in the right places, like forums, blogs, online groups, etc. Spend time everyday to visit such sites because they are invaluable repository of freelance gigs and email addresses of prospects. Alternatively you can sign up with freelance sites like Elance.com, GetAFreelancer.com and Scriptlance.com where you can start bidding on projects and snag a few as early as today!

To conclude, a freelance business is one of the best ways to earn money from home and to work for your own self. If you've got a fair amount of time on your hands, maybe you too should consider freelancing as your full-time career alternative or supplementary income source.

(Hint: While you can find plenty of lucrative freelance assignments on Elance, the other sites mentioned above generally tend to feature lesser-paid projects. However, if you're just starting out as a freelancer, the competition on Elance can prove to be really tough. So you might want to first try GAF and Scriptlance to build up your portfolio, and then go for Elance.)

Are All Work at Home Jobs Just a Scam?

Got a computer with email? You are likely to have been sent some great job opportunity. You've seen them. They say you can work next to zero hours a week and be paid some huge salary for doing so. Even if you haven't had the chance of receiving such a too good to miss job opportunity via email, you'll find similar offerings in the small ads of many local newspapers.

The challenge with these ads isn't so much that these job openings are scams, but rather they dim the view of legitimate work at home job opportunities from possible applicants. If you're looking for a work at home job opportunity, and you've seen so many of these shams, you begin to believe that there aren't any legitimate work at home jobs available and this simply isn't the case.

Take typing for example. If you are a skilled typist, especially one with a known typing speed that you can use as an asset to getting a job (take an online test if you don't know what your current typing speed is), then theres work out there for you. Unfortunately there are also many scams that involve the word typing and you need to be able to distinguish the scam from the opportunity.

One of the first giveaways is in the advert. Is there a telephone number and/or address? Is there a company name? If all of these are missing and only a PO Box address listed for further information, proceed with caution. If the advertisement tells you to send money don't proceed at all with this job lead! If, when the information you requested through the advertisement arrives, it requires you to send money in payment for lists of job prospects don't proceed! Although there are job agencies that do require a subscription in order to use their services in linking you together with clients, small ads that require money can usually be summed up in one word scam! There are hundreds if not thousands of work at home people who can testify to being caught out in such a scheme.

So be careful when you are looking for typing work. Often the best way forward to building a client base is to get out there and introduce yourself to the appropriate marketplace. Who do you want to work for? Do you have any special training/experience such a law or medical background that will give you an advantage over other typists seeking work in those kinds of companies?

Its more than possible to make a good living as a typist whether in your own home or in an office environment just make sure that you read all advertisements carefully and have your scam alert constantly switched on!

Chris Dunn manages a medical transcription business that sponsors a site offering free typing tests. See also: http://www.About-Medical-Transcription.com

Work and home balance

For most, work-life balance is impossible because it is all about important but clashing demands. For example, your child is in a creche, your mother helps with pick-ups and cooking before you get home. Suddenly mum gets the flu, your child has the measles and your partner is sent interstate on business.

To make things worse, the roof starts to leak and the flat looks like the local tip. Now, what do you do without hurting your career prospects?

Research from WP Carey School of Business at Arizona State University shows that people who chose flexitime and part-time options might be at a disadvantage in the workplace.

In many instances, they are seen as not pulling their weight.

Significantly, female workers were seen as having less-promising career prospects than their male counterparts.

But when men chose flexitime, their career prospects took an even bigger dive. The perception was that there was something wrong with them.

Possible solutions include employers talking to staff about how they would like to work, and training managers on how to handle flexitime and part-timers. Career advisers and CentreLink could also do more to match people with flexible working practices.
